When people think about staying at a historic Bed & Breakfast like Oaklea Mansion, they usually picture the romance of it all: the grand architecture, the perfectly set dining table, the peaceful music playing in the background, and the slow mornings spent sipping coffee on the porch.
It is romantic, and providing that magical escape for our guests is the absolute best part of this job. But behind the heavy wood doors and historic charm lies the beautiful, chaotic, and exhausting reality of what it actually takes to keep a 1903 estate running.

The Morning Rush: Breakfast & Butterflies
The day starts early. While I am incredibly lucky to have some amazing help in the kitchen to keep our morning service running smoothly, I still love stepping in from time to time. When the mood strikes—or when duty calls—I get to cook for our guests, and it’s a genuine joy to see everyone fueling up for a day of exploring Winnsboro.
But cooking is only half the battle. Once the last plate is cleared, the real dance begins:
Clearing and washing the dishes.
Wiping down the dining room.
Setting the table all over again so it’s pristine and ready for tomorrow’s sunrise.
The Endless Cycle (Laundry, Laundry, Laundry...)
If you want to know the true secret to running a Bed & Breakfast, it’s this: laundry is a lifestyle.
I currently run two sets of washers and dryers, and let me tell you, I spend half my life wishing for a third or fourth set! But as any small business owner knows, budgets are tight, and making do with what you have is part of the adventure. Every dollar is carefully allocated, so for now, the current machines work overtime to ensure every sheet is crisp, every towel is fluffy, and every room is perfectly squared away.
Turning Over the Rooms
When guests check out, the clock starts ticking. I wear the executive housekeeper hat around here. Sometimes I have a helping hand, but more often than not, it’s just me, a vacuum, and a checklist.
Turning over a historic room isn’t like cleaning a modern hotel. It requires care, attention to detail,
and a lot of muscle memory for perfect hospital corners on the beds. Every room prep is treated like a stage performance—everything must be flawless before the next traveler turns the doorknob.
The "Special Packages" Race Against the Clock
One of my favorite things to do is set up special packages for couples celebrating anniversaries or birthdays. But doing this in a charming, tight-knit small town comes with its own unique logistics!
Our local Winnsboro shops take immense pride in making sure everything they create is absolutely perfect, but small-town businesses also keep specific hours. Managing a B&B means tracking the clock to ensure I can run into town, pick up a stunning fresh floral arrangement, and get back to the mansion to set it up perfectly in the room before the guest checks in. It’s a rewarding hustle!
Caretakers of the Property (And the Animals!)
Owning a historic home means you aren’t just caring for the people inside it—you are a steward of the house itself, the grounds, and the creatures who call it home. On any given afternoon, my tasks seamlessly shift from hospitality to homesteading:
The Animals: Feeding and caring for our doves, cleaning out the dove cage, and looking after the fish.
The Grounds: Heading outside to clean the pond, pulling an endless supply of East Texas weeds, and mowing the expansive lawns to keep the curb appeal sharp.
The Infrastructure: Checking the plumbing (because a historic home always keeps you on your toes!).
